Self portrait

The design of this architecture firm reflects the preferences and ideas of the designer, effectively creating a self-portrait of his ideal office.

Located in Buffalo’s historic Allentown neighborhood, Self-Portrait seeks to embrace and enhance the walkability and creative culture of the neighborhood. At the ground level, a public exhibition space and a café with views of the workshop both welcome the public. At the roof, a community garden shaded by a wave of solar panels creates an efficient and exciting public space.

Inside, the facade slats balance direct and diffused light to encourage a work-life balance. A four-story light well forms the center of a spiral of office space. Ramps reimagine the office environment by allowing desks to share one space, while maintaining independent levels. This separation allows each worker to feel as though they are in their own environment. The ramps allow for seamless connectivity from ground to roof when the office is open for “First Friday” gallery events, while also being inclusive of wheelchair users and people with limited mobility.
