museum of play

What does it mean to play? How does play differ between adults and children? The concept of playing is typically associated more heavily with children than adults. Although adults have gyms, parks, and fields in abundance, there are very few playgrounds for adults. The Museum of Play explored how a space can be used to bridge recreation between adults and children.

A series of sculptures was created and manipulated into landscapes for playing. They depict the ways in which material, scale, and geometric attributes define how a space can be used by children and adults with different sizes and abilities.

Located in the Canalside district in Buffalo, the theoretical Museum of Play embraces the great lawn and harbor’s edge by stepping down towards them. In turn, its cascading form welcomes visitors to the first exhibit - the building itself. The varied steps of the facade create spaces for recreation and congregation. Their increased height as one ascends filters out visitors by size, allowing adults to climb to their own playground.
