432 Railroad spikes

Also a part of the Buffalo Benches Project, 432 Railroad Spikes pays tribute to another major element of the Old First Ward’s history: the railroad. Railroads and railroad tracks have physically, socially, and economically shaped the Old First Ward throughout the history of the neighborhood. This bench transformed the ubiquitous presence of railroad tracks and loose spikes into a respectful, creative, and unique re-imagination.

The modular nature of the material allowed for the creation of a ruled surface formwork. This template facilitated experimentation with and manipulation of the ergonomics of the bench. The curve of the final form allows for a wide range of seating preferences. On one end, the bench rises and straightens to satisfy taller people and upright seating. On the other side, the bench lowers and leans back, accommodating shorter people and a more relaxed posture. The lofting of the two end conditions creates seating variety. The result is a unique and versatile bench that could also withstand a car crash.
